Eric Wamumbi and Betty Maina engage

After running into each other on campaign stops in the months leading up to the August 2022 General Election, Eric Wamumbi, a member of parliament for the Mathira Constituency, and Betty Maina, a representative for Murang'a County, are getting married two years after they met.

Wamumbi engaged Betty over the course of the weekend, advancing the two lovers' romance to its latter phases. Betty agreed to what was asked and boasted about it on social media.

Governors Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Susan Kihika (Nakuru), and nominated Senator Veronicah Maina were among those present when the suggestion was made.

Betty posted pictures of her new engagement ring on social media, thanking everybody who came to the event and especially her fiancé for making it possible.

"Take it day by day, darling Jesus. In his own time, he beautifies everything. I appreciate my sisters planning this fantastic surprise. Eric, you're the best," said Betty.

Eric posted numerous images from the occasion with the remark, "And because of her love, she said yes!"

Following the proposal, Wamumbi is scheduled to pay a visit to Betty's house on Saturday. There, he will formally meet with her parents and the clan and put up his marriage offer.

The Mathira lawmaker said that he had been wooing Betty for two years after they first met when they were both running for office.

When President William Ruto chose Rigathi Gachagua to be his presidential running mate, Wamumbi was set to retain his position as MCA for Konyo Ward in Mathira, Nyeri County.

When Gachagua decided not to run for the Mathira MP seat, Wamumbi was an obvious choice since he had gained the respect of both Ruto and Gachagua because he was the only candidate for MCA in Nyeri County who stood against the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

He did get the support of Ruto and Gachagua on one particular Nyeri campaign stop.

Betty had previously held a directorship at the Athi Water Company throughout her career. She began her political career with the Jubilee Party but soon changed her mind and joined UDA after seeing the atmosphere.

She would win the position and join Wamumbi in the House of Representatives. After beginning their relationship on the campaign trail, this must have strengthened their bond even further.

As the first currently-serving MPs to wed in Kenya's parliament, the two are on track to create history.

Both lawmakers had previous marriages; Wamumbi's spouse passed away, while Betty divorced her ex-husband.
