Azimio leaders and supporters clash with DCI over the grilling of Mungiki sect leader Maina Njenga

When Maina Njenga sympathisers gathered near the DCI headquarters and began yelling slogans, police used tear gas to clear away the group.

Detectives were questioning Maina Njenga while he was still bottled up inside the building, and a gun and marijuana were reportedly found at his home.

On May 25, Maina Njenga travelled with Azimio principals headed by Martha Karua, former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, and George Wajackoyah to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters on Kiambu Road.

Former Ndaragwa Member of Parliament (MP) Jeremiah Kioni and Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria were also present.

Images showing a mob of fans milling around the top officials and welcoming the former Mungiki leader and the rest of his entourage surfaced online.

On May 25, 2023, Martha Karua, the leader of the Narc-Kenya party, travels to the DCI's headquarters with Maina Njenga, the former leader of the Mungiki, as depicted in the images obtained.

Njenga and his team were unable to drive inside the DCI offices; they had to exit the vehicle and approach on foot.

Calvince Okoth, aka Gaucho, a fervent member of the Azimio alliance, attempted to join the DCI shortly after their admission but was turned away.

Njenga complied with a court order and showed up at the DCI headquarters.

There were rumours that the head of the Azimio party, Raila Odinga, might appear to support his close comrade, Njenga.

When former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i was being questioned on March 7, Prime Minister Raila Odinga was not allowed entry to DCI.

Following an anticipatory release on bail request he presented at the Nairobi High Court on May 19, Njenga reappeared before the Nakuru Law Courts on May 24, where he was instructed to appear at the DCI headquarters.

The DCI searched the former cult leader's three properties on May 12 in the counties of Nairobi, Nakuru, and Laikipia.

The DCI said that they found 90 rolls of bhang and two weapons in his home.

According to the report, the police also charged him with affiliation with a gang.

Maina was the Mungiki leader while the late John Michuki was in charge of security for the Mwai Kibaki administration until the state exterminated and outlawed it.
