Hasmukh Patel, managing director of Mombasa Cement and Governor Abdulswamad

Hasmukh Patel, managing director of Mombasa Cement, said on May 26 that despite a rumoured falling out with county governor Abdulswamad Nassir, he would not take down statues placed there.

The businessman further explained via his agents that once the county's government altered the charitable work model, he had repaired his connection with the governor.

Patel, who assisted in converting a garbage dump into the Ksh700 million Kibarani Recreational Park, noted that both sides' issues had been handled.

He said that unnamed individuals with self-serving motives exaggerated the supposed repercussions.

According to reports, the businessman had started dismantling statues from the Makupa Roundabout and other routes leading to Kilifi County.

"We have no issues with the county administration. Since the beginning of time, the governor and the boss have been close friends.

"These minor problems will be resolved. No sculpture erected by the firm will be taken down," according to Patel's spokesman.

He also reassured the community that the business will keep doing charitable activities, and he urged them to cancel a planned protest for early June 2023.

"The governor, who desires the procedure for making donations to be simple, has walked us through his idea. Soon, our charitable activity will resume," the spokesman promised.

Tycoon and Nassir's disagreement arose when the county administration established guidelines for donors' compliance.

Governor Nassir hinted that although he was not against charitable activity, he wanted contributions to be organised more efficiently so that more citizens might benefit.

Patel's contributions to several county hospitals were primarily responsible for the backlash.

"I cannot operate 42 hospitals when each institution is pleading for funding in a letter to donors. We cannot have a disorganised system."

Nassir said, "We will have order, and I won't back down from that."
