President William ruto with Raila Odinga at Nyayo stadium where AFC Leopards played Gor

The 96th Mashemeji Derby was contested at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, May 14, and after the game, President William Ruto presented the Gor Mahia and AFC Leopard squads with a Sh 2 million donation.

After defeating former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, President Ruto addressed the players and said it was the finest game he had seen in a while.

Victor Omune's penalty kick and Maxwell Otieno's effort two minutes before halftime gave the AFC Leopards a 2-1 win in the match.

According to sports analysts, the AFC Leopards defeated Gor for the first time in seven years.

The two leaders of the two sides received Sh1 million apiece from President Ruto.

"This is the finest game I have watched in a very long time, and I want to congratulate you on a fantastic performance. I'll make good on my word that we'll change the game. We've agreed with CS Ababu Namwamba that we'll bring football back to its former grandeur," Ruto added.

President Ruto urged the athletes, "You must win if we bring the games here."

On May 17, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are scheduled to jointly submit their candidatures for the African Cup of Nations.

The nation's football supporters were also asked by the president to promote sportsmanship and abstain from violent behaviour.

He said that individuals should be allowed to watch football with their relatives without worrying about fights breaking out.

President Ruto said that the administration was ready to work with all parties involved in establishing local organisations to support emerging talent.

He said they have to change their whole approach and collaborate alongside each other so that the government may act as a facilitator.
