President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda approved the anti-gay measure into law on Monday, strengthening the penalty for "aggravated gay people."

The new legislation, one of the most anti-LGBTQ laws in the world, criminalises lesbian and gay behaviour and imposes a 20-year prison penalty on anyone who violates it.

"The Anti-Gay Bill 2023 has received the president's approval (@KagutaMuseveni). The Anti-LGBTQ Act 2023 will now take effect," tweeted State House, Uganda.

Although some people thought it was acceptable to prohibit partnerships between people of the same gender, others believed that gender orientation should be a matter of personal choice and that the government should not get involved. As a result, the legislation earned both love and hatred.

Tatiana, a student, claimed that the law's provision that a person convicted of severe LGBTQ crimes faces the death penalty is unconstitutional since the president does not grant life.

"I oppose Museveni's proposal that LGBTQ persons be murdered or imprisoned; he is not the source of life; rather, he ought to refer these individuals for counselling, since the majority of them did not acquire their lesbian or gay identity naturally but rather acquired it from the white man."

She added, "Killing is not the correct thing to do; they should be spoken to, and they could alter their characteristics.

"Because everyone has the right to exist, killing or imprisoning someone is bad. Instead, LGBTQ people should be given a fee they can afford, "according to plumber Victor Mwanja.

"I wholeheartedly endorse the choices of President Museveni because there is simply no manner in which people of identical gender are able to wed each other; that is not appropriate at all," said Nairobi resident Kelvin Alulu.

"I oppose the Ugandan President's slaughter of LGBTQ individuals. They should be made aware of the risks of gayism, and some should be admitted to treatment facilities so they can change. Killing is against both the law and the Bible," according to Shila.
