Karimenu II Dam begins to spill.

As the government promises locals that they are secure, the Karimenu II Dam begins to spill its excess waters.

Due to intense rainfall that has been reported around the area, the Karemene II Dam in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, has begun to overflow.

The Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) said that even with the overflow, the dam is built such that the extra water would not have an impact on those who live downstream.

"Drainage works protect downstream areas from failure by overtopping during El Nino rains, and the spillway design has flood control," the State company said in a statement that was put on X.

According to AWWDA, all potential dam collapse mechanisms and the corresponding emergency actions are detailed in an emergency response plan that has been established.

This comes just after Davis Chirchir, the cabinet secretary for energy, issued a warning to those living downstream of the Kamburu, Kiambere, and Masinga dams to be on the lookout for potential overflows of the man-made bodies of water.
