The match between Arsenal and Newcastle had everyone on the edge of their seats after Anthony Gordon scored the first goal at St. James' Park.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) had to complete three different checks before confirming the goal, which kept everyone on their toes.

The first check was to see if the ball had gone out of play before Gordon could even turn it into the back of the Gunners' net.

The second check was to see if Joelinton had pushed Gabriel Magalhaes into committing a foul while challenging for the ball.

The final check was to determine if Gordon was in an offside position when he received the ball before blasting it past David Raya.

After a thorough examination, VAR found no conclusive evidence for the ball being out of play, or whether Joelinton had handled the ball when challenging Gabriel for a header - hence the goal was allowed.

Gary Neville, who was on live commentary, gave his thoughts on the situation. He said, "The out-of-play check was very close. But one thing is certain, the goal itself was brilliant.

" Raya made a mess of it, and Gabriel's claim for a push in the back by Joelinton was unfounded. That was a natural jump for the ball, nothing more."

Neville continued, "Joelinton's challenge on Gabriel was not a foul for me. He just leaned forward to head the ball but missed it.

"As for the offside check, I'm done with this. Gabriel threw his legs into Joelinton, so it's not a push. I'm not sure if he's offside now, but let's wait for VAR to confirm."
