Behind the partially open kitchen door, I remained still. I had come home from work to retrieve a misplaced file, even though I wasn’t meant to be home that early. Hearing my spouse and the housemaid laughing surprised me. However, it wasn’t the laughing that struck me the most. I heard him remark, “Aki wewe ni mutamuu,” at that moment. We had two wonderful kids, a lovely house, and everything appeared to be ideal from the outside. However, I had seen a change in the last several months. My spouse was aloof. He stopped enquiring about my day. He didn’t spend as much time with me as he did on his phone, always smiling and messaging. I tried to tell myself it was stress from work.
