A mother and her son plunged into the Indian ocean with a car Toyota Vitz KCY 556B. The accident happened at the Makupa Causeway in Mombasa on Wednesday morning.


Winnie Achieng’, 33 with her son, Gift Otieno, 12, were driving from Changamwe to the Mombasa Island in the morning. The driver, his mother, lost control of the car and fell into the ocean.


According to a police report, the deceased was using the outer lane and overtook a motorcycle. She lost control, hit the pavement and plunged into the ocean.


Rescue efforts began quickly to save the two. The boy succeeded to swim to safety but his mother, who was pulled out of the wreck a few minutes later, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Coast General Hospital.

The eyewitnesses alleged that the woman was strapped to her seat by a safety belt. She was unable to get out of the car.
