After a renowned Nigerian gospel singing artist, Osinachi Nwachukwu, died on Friday in an Abuja hospital, police detained her husband.

The 42-year-old was first thought to be suffering from throat cancer, but her family denies this, claiming she was a victim of domestic abuse.

Peter Nwachukwu, her husband, has yet to respond.

According to a police spokeswoman, an inquiry into the reason for her death is underway.

Osinachi Nwachukwu was a prominent gospel singer in Nigeria, with a voice described as "angelic."

Ekwueme, a 2017 blockbuster gospel song with over 72 million YouTube views, featured her.

The news of her death has been met with sadness and indignation by many Nigerians, particularly Christians.

Some people have taken to the internet to demand that religious leaders not counsel church members to stay in abusive marriages. On social media, there has been a lot of talk about domestic violence.

Dunamis International Gospel Centre, which formerly engaged Nwachukwu as lead vocalist, has yet to react to her death but promises to do so soon.

According to the BBC, the church educated its audience that it is better to be single and alive than to die in an abusive marriage in a short film.
