Father Joseph Kariuki Wanjiku, 43.

After being found unresponsive at a hotel in Murang'a County, a Catholic priest who worked as the parish priest at St. Peter's Church in Ruai has been confirmed dead.

Fr. Joseph Kariuki Wanjiku, 43, and a 32-year-old woman booked into the hotel on Friday night, based on a piece of police information.

It stated, in part, that "One Joseph Kariuki Wanjiku, a k/m/a, aged 43 years, a Catholic priest at the Archdiocese of Nairobi and a farmer at Mangu area, checked in at the said hotel together with the woman he was dating, who also transpires to be her coworker at her place of employment in Ruai."

The woman allegedly informed the hotel's management that Kariuki was becoming unsteady and unresponsive at about 8 a.m. on Saturday, which necessitated a trip to a neighbouring hospital.

The story said, "They then took him to Kenol Hospital, where he passed away on arrival while still onboard his car, a black Toyota Harrier."

According to the police, Fr. Karuki's body was discovered with a hotel bed sheet partially covering it and white foam oozing from the lips and nostrils.

The corpse had been sent to the Nairobi Mater Hospital mortuary, awaiting the results of an autopsy and an additional police investigation.
