Beryl Odinga Burial Place Row Settled, Odinga family Agrees

A decision has been made on the ultimate resting site of Beryl Lilian Achieng Mungwari Odinga, who passed away recently. She was the sister of the late Raila Odinga, who served as prime minister in the past.

In an announcement, Raila Odinga Junior, who was the nephew of the dead, said that the family had gathered together and decided that Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, would serve as the location for the burial.

Specifically, he said that his uncle, Senator Dr Oburu Oginga of Siaya, provided him with instruction and permission before the choice was taken.

Raila Jr wrote on his X account, “With the blessings of my uncle Dr Oburu, we sat down with Jakawuor today to choose the final resting place for my late aunt, Ms Beryl Lilian Achieng Mungwari Odinga.” Jakawuor was there so that they could make the decision.

He went on to say that further information on the funeral programme will be disclosed at a later time to the attendees.

The death of Beryl Oginga Odinga, who was the daughter of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first vice president, and Mama Mary Ajuma Oginga, occurred on November 25, 2025, when she was undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in Nairobi. Her age was 78.

Beryl had been battling a protracted illness and had been in and out of the hospital over the course of the last several years, according to a source inside the family.

She had a life that was mainly kept secret, despite the fact that she was a member of one of the most influential political families in the nation.

After Oburu, Raila, the late Ngire Omuodo Agola, and Dr Akinyi Wenwa, she was the fourth child to be born into the Odinga family. She was the fourth child to be born. However, her life included a great deal more than the political prominence of the clan; she was instrumental in the formation of significant professional milestones in both Kenya and Zimbabwe.

Beryl, who had previously worked as a teacher and a lawyer, made history when she became the first Black person to hold the position of town clerk in Mutare, Zimbabwe.

She eventually worked her way up to the position of company secretary at the Housing Corporation of Zimbabwe, where she was able to rebuild her career subsequent to her return to the nation as a legitimate resident.

She had been appointed to the board of directors of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) in January of 2020, and she served as the chairperson of the NWSC in Kenya. She won the respect of her coworkers and the communities that she served via her leadership while serving in public institutions.

In the years leading up to his passing in 1985, Beryl was married to the late Otieno Ambala, who had been a member of parliament for Gem for a short period of time.

The Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, who has been actively helping with funeral plans, was one of the family members who was present during the debates.

Senator Oburu Oginga, who had been away on a brief vacation in Dubai, has also been a guiding force in the process. He returned to the nation on November 28, 2025, after spending some time there.

Following the extremely taxing months that followed Raila’s passing and the Orange Democratic Movement’s celebrations of its 20th anniversary, the veteran politician had taken a hiatus for the purpose of resting and reflecting on his experiences.

Immediately after arrival, Oburu went straight to the Lee Funeral Home to pay his respects to his sister’s remains. He was joined by members of the party in a solemn procession that mirrored the emotion that was present inside ODM. Announcements on the funeral arrangements for Beryl will be made in the following days.
