Omar Ali Mohamed, also known as “Nyanya,” stands accused of kidnapping and gang-raping Mombasa-based blogger Bruce John, also known as “Chawa 001,” following the viral release of a TikTok video critical of Governor Abdulswamad Nassir. The Shanzu Court has granted bail to Omar Ali Mohamed.
In spite of protests that he may be a flight risk and could tamper with witnesses, Mohamed was freed on a bond of Ksh 1 million or a cash bail of Ksh 500,000.
The allegations state that Mohamed leased the vehicle that took the victim to the Mwakirunge dumpsite, where they discovered him abandoned and abused.
The court was presented with M-Pesa records, CCTV video, and other evidence that linked Mohamed to the crime; nevertheless, Mohamed disputed the allegations that were brought against him.
After being persuaded under the premise of apologising to the governor, the victim was allegedly attacked by Mohamed and four other individuals who are also suspected of the crime, according to the investigators.
An abduction occurred at the house of Bruce John, which was located in Bamburi in the Jitegemee area.
