Liverpool agrees to a deal to sign 17-year-old Austrian centre-back Ifeanyi Ndukwe for summer 2026. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano gave it his “here we go” stamp on January 2, meaning the clubs have shaken on terms. The young defender will move to Anfield in July after he turns 18.
Ndukwe plays for Austria Wien, also known as FK Austria Vienna. He has come through their academy and sits on the first-team bench this season, though he hasn’t played in the top league yet. At 6 ft 5 in tall, he stands out physically. Scouts see him as a big talent with room to grow.
The news first came from Austrian reporter Alexander Huber. He said Austria Wien accepted a multi-million euro offer. Romano followed up quickly, confirming the agreement starts in the summer. Ndukwe said yes to Liverpool’s plans for him.
Post-Brexit rules stop Premier League clubs from signing players under 18 from abroad right away. Ndukwe turns 18 in March, so the deal waits until preseason.
He will likely start with the under-21s under coach Rob Page. But the club thinks he could step up to the first team later.
Liverpool’s team spotted him through director of global talent Matt Newberry. Ndukwe impressed at the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar last November. Austria reached the final but lost 1-0 to Portugal. He helped keep clean sheets along the way.
Other clubs showed interest too, including Inter Milan earlier. But Ndukwe picked Liverpool. The fee isn’t official, but reports suggest several million euros. That helps Austria Wien with their finances while they develop more young players.
This fits Liverpool’s way of building for the future. They often bring in promising teenagers and give them time in the academy. Recent examples include other young defenders joining the setup.
Fans reacted fast online. Many like the idea of adding height and potential to the back line. Some noted the club plans ahead even with senior options now.
Ndukwe stays with Austria Wien until the end of this season. He might get more chances there to build experience.
As the January window goes on, Liverpool might look at immediate needs too. But this deal shows focus on long-term growth.
Young players like Ndukwe get excited about moves to big clubs. He has a chance to train at top facilities and learn from pros.
The transfer should go official closer to summer. For now, it’s agreed in principle.
Liverpool keeps an eye on talents across Europe. This one came from strong youth performances.
