Chelsea Youth Coach Calum McFarlane Takes Interim Charge at Etihad

Chelsea’s under-21s coach Calum McFarlane will lead the first team this Sunday against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The move comes after Enzo Maresca left the club on New Year’s Day. McFarlane steps in for the Premier League match on January 4, his first time managing a senior game.

Maresca’s departure surprised many. He had been in charge for 18 months and guided Chelsea to wins in the Conference League and Club World Cup last season. Things turned sour lately, though.

The team won just one of their last seven league games. Reports point to tensions with the board, including disagreements over player fitness and some talks about future jobs. Chelsea sit fifth in the table with 30 points, still in the hunt for a Champions League spot.

The club put out a short statement saying they and Maresca parted ways. No big details on why right away, but insiders say results played a part, along with other issues behind the scenes. Maresca’s staff left too.

McFarlane joined Chelsea last summer from Southampton, where he coached their under-21s. Before that, he worked in Manchester City’s academy for years. He knows the Etihad well from his time there. Now, he’s got a tough first job: facing Pep Guardiola’s side.

McFarlane spoke to reporters on Friday. He called the last day or so a whirlwind. “It’s been crazy, but exciting too,” he said. He even needed his access pass updated to get into the first-team areas. The players have stayed focused, he added. They’re ready for the challenge.

Manchester City come into this after a 0-0 draw at Sunderland on New Year’s Day. They’re second in the league, chasing leaders Arsenal. Guardiola praised Maresca, saying Chelsea lost a good manager and person. But he stayed focused on his own team.

Chelsea have struggled on the road against City lately. They haven’t won at the Etihad in the league for years. Man City dominate at home most times. Still, with a new voice in charge, the visitors might get a lift. Fans hope for a reaction after the recent slump.

Names for the full-time job are already floating around. Liam Rosenior, who manages Strasbourg (another club in the same ownership group), is a top candidate. He’s done well there. The club expects to name someone soon, maybe in days.

For now, it’s McFarlane’s show. He’s got support from his under-21 staff and others. Set-piece coach Bernardo Cueva stays on too. The squad trained as usual this week.

This match kicks off at 5:30 PM UK time on Sunday. It’s live on Sky Sports in the UK. A lot of eyes will be on how Chelsea respond without Maresca.

Chelsea owners have changed managers often since taking over. This is another quick switch. They want results fast, with big games coming up in cups too.

McFarlane seems calm about it all. He said the players are professional and locked in. “We know it’s a tough place to go, but we’ve got good players,” he noted.

City will look to bounce back from that draw. They dropped points but stayed strong defensively.

Injuries might play a part. Chelsea have a few doubts, like Marc Cucurella training but not certain to play.

This game could set the tone for Chelsea’s January. A good result under the interim boss would help a lot.

Fans are mixed. Some wanted change after the poor run. Others think Maresca deserved more time after last season’s trophies.

Either way, the focus shifts to the pitch now. McFarlane gets his chance in a big spot.

The Etihad should be full and loud. City fans expect a win. Chelsea ones hope for something better than recent visits.

We’ll see how it goes. One thing’s sure: it’s a big test for the young coach stepping up.
