John Mbadi Crowned Patron of Nairobi Luo Council of Elders

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has been crowned patron of the Nairobi Luo Council of Elders. The honour came during a colourful ceremony that brought together community leaders, politicians and elders from the Luo community living in the capital.

The event took place in Nairobi, where Mbadi received traditional symbols of leadership and acceptance. Elders placed a special cloth on him and handed over items that represent wisdom and guidance.

Many in attendance described the moment as deeply meaningful, especially for a man who has risen through national politics while staying connected to his roots.

John Mbadi has served in different government positions over the years. His latest role at the Treasury puts him at the centre of Kenya’s economic decisions.

Supporters say crowning him patron shows the community values his experience and wants him to offer direction on matters affecting Luo people in Nairobi. These include business support, cultural preservation and helping young people settle in the city.

One elder who spoke at the gathering praised Mbadi for remembering where he comes from even as he handles big national responsibilities. He noted that many professionals from the community succeed but forget to give back.

Mbadi, in his acceptance speech, thanked the council and promised to work closely with them on issues that matter to families. He spoke about unity, development projects and creating opportunities for the youth.

The Nairobi Luo Council of Elders plays an important role in settling disputes, advising on cultural matters and supporting members who face challenges away from their home counties.

With many Luo people living and working in Nairobi, the council acts as a home away from home. Having a senior government figure like Mbadi as patron could open doors for better collaboration with authorities on security, business licences and social programmes.

Guests at the ceremony included members of parliament, business people and religious leaders from the community. The atmosphere was joyful with traditional songs and dances filling the air.

Younger attendees took plenty of photos and videos, sharing them widely on social media. Many commented that it was good to see respected leaders being recognised in this way.

Some political watchers see the move as strategic. Mbadi remains an influential voice in ODM and the broader opposition politics even while serving in government.

Aligning with the council could strengthen his support base ahead of future elections. Others simply view it as a genuine cultural honour with no hidden motives.

In conversations around Nairobi estates where many Luo families live, the news received positive feedback. The Luo Council has existed for years but gained more visibility in recent times as communities seek to organise themselves better in urban settings.
