Orwoba Says Party Godfather Saved Karen Nyamu From Senate Action

Senator Gloria Orwoba has hit back at Senator Karen Nyamu for her controversial comments on a young school girl in the Senate. The outspoken politician says party loyalty and a top godfather spared Nyamu from severe punishment while others are being punished for minor issues.

Orwoba commented while responding to the ongoing debate surrounding Nyamu’s comments during a Senate session that involved a Grade 10 student. She pointed to what she believes are double standards in how the Senate deals with its members.

“Karen Nyamu cannot be sent home and the Speaker of the Senate is still in office,” Orwoba said. Her words have sparked new conversations about accountability among elected leaders.

The initial incident was when Nyamu made what many called an inappropriate joke linking the young student with Senator Cherargei. The comment was swiftly condemned by parents, teachers and ordinary Kenyans as disrespectful to involve a child in that way.

Nyamu later apologised, saying her words were disrespectful and inappropriate, but the damage was done in the eyes of many citizens.

Orwoba says the matter should be handled equitably on all sides. If the Senate is serious about discipline, it must apply the same rules to everyone, including those in higher positions, she says.

Some quarters have backed her stance, saying some leaders often get off the hook due to their connections or party positions. Others beg to differ, saying that Nyamu’s apology should suffice and that there’s no point in dragging the issue any further.

This latest twist adds to the continuing conversation about behaviour in Parliament. Many Kenyans watch Senate proceedings on TV or social media and expect leaders to lead by example, especially when young people visit the chambers.

School children should be there to inspire the next generation, not to create uncomfortable moments that trend for the wrong reasons.

Women leaders have shared different views on the situation. Some agree with Orwoba’s call for consistency in dealing with cases. Others fear that too much attention on this one event distracts from important national issues such as the economy and security.

Senator Nyamu has kept a low profile since making her apology. Supporters say she was caught up in the heat of the moment and has taken responsibility for her mistake.

But critics contend public office requires more careful speech at all times. The debate demonstrates how quickly words uttered in Parliament can reach homes all over Kenya and influence the people’s confidence in institutions.

Orwoba’s intervention reveals the complex dynamics of the political party relationships. Loyalty is often an important factor in solving problems internally.

Her comments indicate she believes Nyamu was given more leeway because of these dynamics. Whether it will find its way to any official discussion in the Senate remains to be seen, but it has certainly kept the story alive in public discourse.

As the conversation continues, many ordinary citizens hope leaders on all sides learn from the episode. Kenya needs mature discussions in Parliament on dealing with the real problems facing families. Personal comments that are irrelevant to serious work only serve to erode public confidence in those elected to serve.
