According to Global Internet Monitor, there was no physical subsea cable damage during Kenya’s internet outage.

The Global Internet Monitor confirms that there were no strains or challenges on the sub-sea cables connecting Africa. Tanzania, South Africa, and other countries directly connected to the cable did not face any internet downtimes.

The Seacom that connects to the subsea fibre cables did not have any downtime, and everything was running smoothly. However, Safaricom exposed themselves as the government tried to shut down the internet and TV stations for airing and streaming live protest events.

The delay in connectivity occurred as the country’s ICT regulator, the Communications Authority, claimed on Monday it had no intentions to shut down or tamper with the internet today.

In a statement, the authority maintained that it “had no intention whatsoever to interfere with the quality of connectivity or shut down internet traffic.” Such conduct would be a violation of our own ethos, the freedom of speech in particular, and the constitution as a whole.

Users have experienced poor or interrupted internet connections, and NetBlocks has confirmed that the outage also impacted Burundi and Uganda, two nearby nations.

Safaricom said on X (previously Twitter) that subsea cable issues are the cause of the disruption. Some claim that Airtel is operational, which is inconsistent with a cable outage.
