A bodyguard attached to Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi is among three police officers arrested in Kitengela, Kajiado, after they were reportedly found in possession of five elephant tusks.
The Presidential Escort Unit (PEU), which protects President William Ruto and his family, also arrested a security official.
The third officer is attached to Milimani Law Courts.
On Saturday, the three were arrested, along with a civilian, while carrying five elephant tusks weighing 29 kilogrammes and worth Ksh 2.9 million.
They also had two pistols and 30 bullets when they were arrested on June 15. Kitengela police boss Patrick Manyasi confirmed the incident.
Manyasi said the suspects who aided their arrest were on the Kenya Wildlife Services officers’ radar.
KWS officers trailed the suspects from Eldoret to Nairobi and then to Kitengela, where the arrest took place.
Officers from KWS arrested the four at a roadblock in Kitengela, according to officials. The suspects were subdued after drawing their pistols during arrest.
Police said the suspects were taken to Kitengela Police Station before being transferred to KSW holdings in Lang’ata, Nairobi.
According to the police, the suspect will face charges for possessing wildlife trophies of endangered species, a violation of Section 92(4) of the Wildlife Conservation Management Act 2013.
According to officials, the seizure indicates that some elephants have died, and it is likely that the incidents occurred in the surrounding parks.
These arrests and seizures shocked many in the service, who suspected the officers had been involved in previous crimes.
If judicial officers do not charge the suspects with ongoing go-slowing over the shooting of a magistrate in Makadara Law Courts, they may spend more time in custody.
