Alchemist Bar shuts down after racism viral video footage

The Alchemist Bar has closed down to allow for the completion of inquiries into allegations of racism.

The club issued a statement saying that Nairobi city county officers had visited the establishment to examine CCTV footage, "to review the night of May 29, to determine if the guests in question were denied entry and if there was a policy in place to have separate lines for guests," according to the statement.

The county will also investigate whether or not there has ever been a discriminatory policy. "Interviews and film from previous events, both at the gate and inside the facility, will be examined."

The inquests come just after the Nairobi-based entertainment venue was labelled racist after a short video began circulating over the weekend that appeared to perpetuate racism against black people by having white and Indian clubbers in one line and blacks in another as they stood in line to get into the bar.

On Monday, the club issued another statement distancing itself from the transgression.

In its rejoinder, the club now claims that the venue has only one main door through which all customers visiting for the first time must pass.

"The line is made up of people from all walks of life. They stated, "We have never had a policy of dividing lines."

Before, the club handed out an apology saying it admitted guilt for the action.

“To anyone who has felt aggrieved, we sincerely apologize and look forward to sitting down together and addressing these issues head-on.”
