Tanzanian Boyfriend Maximillian John Madeni Arrested Over Alice Rianga Murder in Bondo

Alice Rianga, a second-year student at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, was found dead in Barkowino Forest days after she went missing. The discovery has shaken many families and triggered heated online discussions about the dangers that can come with fast living among young university students from ordinary homes.

The 20-year-old studied education science with a focus on mathematics and chemistry. She left Bondo town on May 7 heading back toward campus but never made it. Her phone went silent, and friends grew worried when they could not reach her.

On Saturday women collecting firewood came across her body in the forest area of Bondo subcounty in Siaya. Police say she was likely killed somewhere else and then dumped there because they found no clear signs of a struggle at the scene.

Her roommate helped identify a 28-year-old Tanzanian man known as Maximillian John Madeni as someone Alice had been seeing. Officers arrested him on Monday.

He works as a gold dealer, and investigators are still piecing together what happened in her final hours. The case has moved fast, but many questions remain unanswered as her family waits for the full postmortem results.

What has captured public attention almost as much as the killing itself is the kind of life Alice lived. Photos circulating online show a young woman who seemed to enjoy experiences far beyond what most students can afford.

She took holidays in Diani, Zanzibar and the Maasai Mara. She ate at expensive restaurants and flew whenever she travelled to Nairobi or Mombasa instead of taking the usual bus or matatu. People who knew her described a fairytale lifestyle that stood out even among working adults, let alone fellow students.

She came from a humble background yet moved in circles with wealthy older men. One name that keeps coming up is a man known as Salvoguy. Many online commentators wonder how she managed that shift and whether it put her in harm’s way.

Some speculate that jealousy or discovery of other relationships could have played a role, though police have not confirmed any motive yet. Others insist that no matter her choices, she did not deserve such a brutal end.

Her death comes shortly after the tragic case of Consolata Githinji, another young student whose fall from an Airbnb in Nairobi raised many suspicions. Together the two stories have left parents across Kenya feeling anxious about sending daughters away to study.

Students at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University marched in protest demanding quicker action and better safety around campus. They want leaders to address the risks that come when young people get caught between campus life and big city temptations.

Alice’s family is heartbroken. Her father reportedly collapsed when he received the news. Relatives described her as a bright girl with big dreams of becoming a teacher. Now they face the painful task of burying her while police continue their work.

Friends remember her stylish way of dressing and how she carried herself with confidence. In her photos she often smiled widely at beaches and airports, looking like someone who had found a way to enjoy life fully.
