Residents of Kiangua Location in Meru County exhaled a huge sigh after finding that the 'lion' they had seen was only a picture on a Carrefour grocery bag.
Several people who shared the story on social media reported that the 'huge cat' observed at Mutiribu village scared the residents, prompting them to seek help to avoid an attack.
"Today in Meru County, there was a lot of drama. Villagers in Mutiribu, a peaceful hamlet approximately two kilometres from Mt Kenya park, believed a lion was lurking in a hedge. The residents alerted the assistant chief, who in turn contacted the chief.
According to a Facebook post by Eric Kathenya, "the administrators, in turn, called the nearest Kenya Wildlife Service to come and control the animal before it could cause harm to humans and animals."
Later, KWS rangers arrived on the scene to apprehend the animal, only to realize it was a Carrefour shopping bag image.
Not only were the people grateful, but many found the occurrence amusing and began photographing the bag.
"Rangers from the KWS arrived and prepared to trap the lion. They were persuaded as well that it was the large cat. The penny finally dropped. The lion turned out to be a paper tiger. Eric added, "Hehe... It was an image on a Carrefour grocery bag."
