Japhet Koome, who is the Inspector General of Police

Japhet Koome, who is the Inspector General of Police, says that Fred Matiang'i's security was cut back because he was the former Interior Cabinet Secretary.

All former government officials had their security withdrawn or downgraded. He said it was a normal routine for retired officials.

"Former presidents require six officers, while the rest require one to three officers or none at all."That is the law.

"They cannot be protected as long as they are in office."

"If every former official is given such protection, who will protect Kenyans?" he said.

While speaking in Mombasa, the IG confirmed the claims but said that it was a normal practice that was based on the situation.

"Matiang'i and other former government officials, according to Koome, cannot get the same level of protection as the Cabinet Secretary now on duty."

"They have reportedly announced their retirement in the media. They have sometimes said that they love driving themselves.

"Do you give that person the same level of security as a working cabinet secretary, who has to report to work at 6 a.m. and occasionally leaves at 10 p.m.?"

"Let's be truthful. Is what I'm saying logical? " IG Koome announced the scaled-down security of retired officials on February 3rd, a Friday.

The IG didn't believe that the officers' political views had anything to do with why their security details for former high-level government officials were cut.
