In preparation for the prosecution of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, anti-riot police in Nakuru have set up barricades on all routes approaching the Nakuru Law Courts.

Njenga is expected to be charged with a number of crimes, including assisting a gang.

After being accused of speaking at a gathering in the Wanyororo neighbourhood of Nakuru County on May 11, 2023, to “encourage support” for the illegal criminal organisation Mungiki, Njenga was interrogated by DCI officers last Thursday in Nairobi.

He is also accused of participating in criminal activity. He is charged with extending invitations to attendees of a gathering in the Wanyororo neighbourhood, where he is believed to have given Mungiki-related orders.

Additionally, he is charged with having “a military backpack strap, property of the National Police Service (NPS), that is considered to have been stolen or fraudulently obtained.”

However, ongoing altercations caused by police firing tear gas canisters at the crowds of people who had gathered there to support Njenga disrupted his presence at the DCI offices.

More than 90 rolls of marijuana and two weapons that were recovered at a residence connected to him in Ngomongo, Bahati, are also being investigated.
