African football supporters will need to find other ways to watch the tournament after a major broadcaster decides not to continue covering the AFCON 2023.
SuperSport, a reputable satellite TV service provider, has formally declared that it would not be carrying the much awaited Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 competition.
Millions of football enthusiasts in Kenya are devastated by this news and are frantically trying to find other means to watch one of the greatest football tournaments on the continent.
In a statement released on Wednesday, DStv’s parent company, Multichoice, acknowledged this development.
The statement claims that AFCON 2023, which is slated to take place from January 13–February 11, 2024, was not successfully aired by SuperSport TV.
The exact announcement said, “SuperSport Channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023. As a result, the channel will not broadcast the tournament.”
Although football fans will certainly be discouraged by this news, there remains a ray of optimism.
Additionally, Multichoice disclosed that Free Air (FTA) channels via partner broadcast stations would continue to provide AFCON 2023 games for people to watch.
Thus, even if they will have to use a different method, football fans may still enjoy the exciting games.
In order to reassure their consumers that they are still committed to offering the best sports programming, Multichoice stressed in their statement how they would make sure football fans have access to unmatched entertainment and football games on their DStv and GOtv platforms.
With 24 nations scheduled to compete in more than sixty games, the AFCON 2023 competition looks to be a thrilling event.
But concerns have been expressed regarding how supporters in certain areas would be able to see the matches since SuperSport TV is not part of the broadcast plan.
The Sub-Saharan transmission rights have been reported to be held by New World TV, a pan-African broadcaster located in Togo.
East Africa, which includes nations like Kenya and Uganda, the whole CECAFA area, West Africa, South Africa, and Central Africa are all included in these regions.
The competition could not be shown in these areas without a sub-license from New World TV, which was formerly owned by SuperSport TV.
Additionally, sub-licensing agreements with New World TV, a television broadcaster headquartered in Togo, are required of FTA stations in 46 countries, including Kenya, that want to broadcast AFCON.
Confederation of African Football (CAF) and beIN Sports, a Qatari broadcasting company, have partnered to reclaim the rights to broadcast football in North Africa and the Middle East (MENA).
Thirty-four countries will compete for the coveted title of CAF AFCON 34, which is scheduled to begin in Ivory Coast on January 13.
Football enthusiasts are excited for the intense competition, memorable moments, and exhilarating matches that AFCON consistently provides, despite the broadcasting difficulties caused by SuperSport’s departure.
