CS Kithure Kindiki to ban public servants from Tiktok as Tiktok ban debate ensues

CS Interior Kithure Kindiki

As a result of Bob Ndolo’s petition, CS Interior Kithure Kindiki made an appearance before the National Assembly Committee today. A ban on TikTok in Kenya was one of the goals of the petition.

If you’re between the ages of 18 and 24, you might have heard of TikTok, one of the most rapidly expanding social media platforms.
It boasts 10.60 million active members, which is more than any other social networking platform in Kenya, according to reports.
A large portion of Kenyans’ free time is devoted to perusing a personalised feed.
But there’s a creator behind every video, putting their heart and soul into coming up with the concept and hoping for the best from their viewers.
Because a TikTok ban removes the creator’s ability to access their account and all of their videos, it’s like getting fired from a job.
At the moment, there are three primary ways for Kenyan producers to make money off of their dedicated fan networks and high-quality material on TikTok.
Money “Gifts” donated by fans, the TikTok Creator Fund, and LIVE Subscription fees all fall within this category.
Anything that violates someone else’s copyright or trademark can result in a ban. Included in this category are instances of taking someone else’s work and utilising it without their consent.
Bans and suspensions are possible outcomes of spamming, which includes posting the same or similar content multiple times, leaving spammy comments, and getting involved in other forms of spamming.
Hate speech, graphic violent content, nudity or explicit content, and dangerous behaviour are all examples of restricted content that might result in a ban.
“Kenya has a strong legal framework in place to ensure the safe, efficient, and effective use of technology and the digitization of services in both the public and private sectors, ” according to CS Kindiki’s speech.
Hacking and phishing are examples of fraudulent or malevolent behaviours that might lead to bans and thus make it simpler to engage in such operations.
Furthermore, CS Kindiki clarifies that TikTok has been contacted by the government, specifically the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, to assure that user privacy is protected, to furnish information regarding the efficacy of age verification and content filtering, and to prove that the company complies with the provisions of the Data Protection Act, 2019.
