The legal proprietor of the land where the Thursday night gas blast happened in Embakasi’s Mradi Village, Derrick Kimathi, refused to accept any responsibility for the incident.
Wandugi Karathe, Kimathi’s attorney, claims that the facility was not being used as a gas-filling factory as had been claimed but rather as a garage at the time of the explosion.
“The car that started this incident was entering Mr. Kimathi’s property without permission, and he is actively looking for the information on that car so that the police can see it,” he said.
Wandugi said that Kimathi had submitted an unsuccessful application in 2023 for a permit to run a gas-filling factory.
“He did not start that business simply because he understood what is required of a gas filling plant, and the property has been maintained to be used as a garage where vehicles are repaired,” the man said.
Wandugi denied rumours that Kimathi is hidden as well.
“He is accessible, a member of the public, and has communication with certain police units.”
“Our client is prepared to assist the police with their probe to the fullest extent possible, but he asks that any unfounded statements that could be used against him in the media not be published,” the point person added.
Almost 300 individuals were hurt in the explosion, and three people lost their lives as a result of their wounds.
