Last season, Everton ended the Premier League in 17th place, only one spot above the drop zone. They were two points ahead of Leicester City, the last of the three clubs to be demoted to the Championship and now occupying the 18th spot.

Sean Dyche’s Everton secured their status in the top division by earning four points from their final two games of the 2022–23 season.

Since Dyche spent the entire summer interacting with his players, it was anticipated that things would get better at the start of the new season.

Everton, on the other hand, has had a dismal start to the 2023–24 Premier League campaign. They began with a 1-0 loss at home to Fulham, who then suffered a 3-0 home loss to Brentford.

A weekend matchup between Everton and Aston Villa took place at Villa Park. Aston Villa had lost handily to Newcastle United the previous weekend.

Everton lost 4-0 to Aston Villa and dropped to the bottom of the standings as a result. Everton played poorly for the whole game.

In a post-game interview, Dyche claimed, “I ought to have taken every member of the squad off at halftime.”

It’s important to keep in mind that the same Everton team travelled to Brighton at the close of the previous campaign and triumphed 5-1 with an outstanding performance.

However, this same bunch of players struggled and failed against Aston Villa over the weekend.

Dyche guided Everton into the Premier League playoffs last season, but since taking over the club, he has only won five of the team’s past 20 games.

Since most of the Everton team’s previous troublemakers are still on the roster, it is not entirely surprising that they are having difficulties at the start of the current season.

However, after a summer of training under Dyche, supporters would have anticipated seeing the club play with better defensive organisation.

They are not, and for Everton supporters, this is maybe the most concerning part of the loss against Aston Villa.

At Villa Park, there were defensive lapses, and Everton was a straightforward opponent.

Alex Iwobi and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were both hurt at Aston Villa, adding insult to injury to Everton’s already dire situation. At this point, they have no choice but to be without two crucial players.

One little bright spot from the setback against Aston Villa was Arnaut Danjuma’s attitude after being substituted, but it is obvious that Dyche has a huge task ahead of him with Everton this year.

It is obvious that the club needs additional troops, particularly in the attack, but it is uncertain whether Dyche will have the money to sign players before the recruitment deadline.

Despite a few close calls, Everton has never been demoted from the Premier League. The club may be in a life-or-death situation at the culmination of their current campaign as well.
