Martha Koki, the MCA for the Mariakani ward |
Following a decision to sell her wigs in order to raise money for hungry families, a female member of the Kilifi County Assembly (MCA) stirred up much excitement among Kenyans.
When Martha Koki, the MCA for the Mariakani ward, posted on social media that she was selling her expensive human hair wigs to raise money for charity, a lot of people were surprised.
“The images of the hungry youngster weeping in class, well, I’m selling 2 of my 100% human hair wigs for Sh10,000 each. I’ll post pictures. Please purchase them as I combine food. Anyone with things they could donate to me or for an auction, please help,” she asked on her social media page.
She got both praise and ridicule on the popular issue. Some people said she could do more to help the world’s hungry than sell wigs.
However, speaking to journalists at the County Assembly facilities in Malindi town during the screening of County Executive Committee Members (CECM) nominees, Koki said that this was not the first time she had sold some of her possessions to aid the weak. She added that she had already sold more than 10 wigs, and the proceeds would be used to purchase food for families affected by the drought.
“I have observed this tendency so often, and I have done this before. During the COVID-19 time, I even sold some of my possessions to benefit others,” she stated.
