In Lamu, the last cruise ship of its type had not visited the island for ten years, so locals saw the cruise ship’s arrival as a major turning point.
After sailing from Jeddah to Djibouti, Zanzibar, and lastly, Lamu, the MV SH Diana had the potential to revolutionise the travel industry in this idyllic location.
The visitors were taken from the ship in tenda boats despite the bad weather, and they braved the downpour to get to the island.
Presenting a certificate to the ship’s master as a token of appreciation for picking Lamu as a destination was Engineer Vincent Sidai, General Manager of Lamu Port, during a ceremony marking the ship’s first call.
Issa Timamy, the governor of Lamu, expressed his sincere gratitude to the travellers for selecting the island.
The arrival of MV SH Diana has been a huge boost to the sector, according to Chairman Ziwa Abdalla of the Lamu Tour Guide Association, who expressed his excitement.
He pointed out that the community would benefit from such infrequent visits.
“We need more of this, and our lives will change if we can have ten of these in a year,” stated Abdalla.
A fresh feeling of hope and optimism for the future of tourism on the island was left behind by the MV SH Diana as it sailed away from Lamu.
