Big day for Kisii county as on Friday it will host DP William Ruto and Raila Odinga who will have events running simultaneously as the battle for the Gusii swing vote escalates ahead of the 2022 elections.

ODM chief Raila Odinga will be attending a burial on the same day with Deputy President William Ruto on another visit in the region.

ODM Boss Raila Odinga will be in Igare in Bobasi constituency for the burial of journalist Dennis Onsarigo’s father, while Dr Ruto will be in Bomachoge Borabu for a fundraiser in Kenyenya.

The two events will be approximately 30 kilometres apart.

The DP has made important inroads in a region that the ODM leader has traditionally held significant political backing.

Presidential aspirants will be wrestling for the over 1.5 million votes in Kisii and Nyamira counties.

However, it is still unclear if Mr Odinga will be on the ballot or not come to the 2022 General Election.

ODM chief was last in Kisii about eight months ago for the Building Bridges Initiative consultative forum launch, while Dr Ruto has been in the area more than three times in the recent past and met more than five delegations from Gusii in his Karen and Sugoi home.

The ODM leader’s spokesman, Mr Dennis Onyango, has confirmed the visit by Mr Odinga.

Dagorreti North MP Simba Arati added that their boss tour will not clash with Dr Ruto’s as the two constituencies are a significant distance apart.

“Moreover, Mr Odinga is attending a funeral and it was not planned for. It also cannot be postponed because someone else is campaigning,” said Mr Arati.

Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi, who will host the DP, said, “There is no problem, as long as no one causes chaos.”

“We pray that the chaos experienced ahead of his arrival three-weeks ago will not re-occur,” said Mr Maangi.
