The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has released a statement rescinding Cleophas Malala’s nomination as its secretary general.
The party said in a statement on Friday that Vice Chairman Hassan Omar would assume the role temporarily after deliberation.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party declared that the modifications take effect right now.
Following extensive and collaborative discussions and following its authority under Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution, the National Executive Committee has decided to appoint Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan, the Vice-Chairperson, to serve as the Secretary-General in an acting capacity.
The party immediately revoked Hon. Cleophas Malala’s appointment as interim Secretary General.
Cecily Mbarire, the governor of Embu and the party’s chairman, presided over the NEC meeting.
There were also other NEC members present, including elected officials.
Following the meeting, the party announced that it would also be implementing administrative reforms.
“Consequently, the Party will be undertaking a raft of administrative and operational steps to swiftly implement its agenda and set forth its own unique strategy of inclusive, participative, and consultative organisation.”
Malala received an acting appointment as UDA secretary general in February 2023.
He took over Veronica Maina’s position after she received a Senate nomination.
On Wednesday, the party announced that it would hold an emergency meeting with the NC on Friday.
This came after an earlier event on the same day that saw some Cleophas Malala supporters attack the party headquarters.
In less than a day, another group of founding members ‘ousted’ Malala and declared Joe Khalende the new SG.
Party head Cecily Mbarire told the media that the meeting would go over the issue in depth and decide what steps to take in reaction to today’s occurrence.
“We will no longer tolerate this. After the NEC meeting on Friday, we will take the required steps, “she said.
In addition, she denounced the political thugs, who she said were sent in to wreck havoc at the party, and gave the members her word that the party will continue on its current path in spite of today’s tragedy.
She said, “We do not in any way support what has happened today. We are a party that believes in the rule of law, and we have very clear ways and means of coping with our disagreements.”
Mbarire simultaneously criticized Khalende’s actions, asserting that a constitution guides the party.
