Kilifi County’s former football coach Peter Muriithi received a life sentence with an additional 110 years in prison.
During the proceedings in a court in Kilifi, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) successfully presented evidence that implicated a former football coach in the sexual assault of young boys. The former coach received a life sentence in prison as a result.
Further to the life imprisonment sentence, the suspect, namely Peter Muriithi, was fined Ksh. 90 million or, by default, served an extra 110 years in prison for child pornography, being in possession of videos with obscene images of a minor aged 11 years, and trafficking in persons for the purposes of exploiting them sexually, contrary to Section 3(1) as read with Section 3(5) of the Counter Trafficking Persons Act No. 8 of 2010.
After finding the coach guilty of sexually abusing the children he was coaching, Kilifi principal magistrate Ivy Wasike sentenced him.
To secure the children’s silence about his actions, the prosecution presented the court with a detailed description of how the accused, who managed a football club with players under the age of 15, would enlist the children and provide their families with financial support.
The criminal acts began in 2022 and continued until 2023 in the Mwembe Tayari neighbourhood of the Malindi subcounty.
There is a fourteen-day window for the suspect to file an appeal against the sentence.
