Over 13 million Kenyans don’t know about the Affordable Housing Program, yet the government is deducting 1.5% of their pay for it, according to a new report by KNBS.
Nearly half (46.4%) of Kenyans working are unaware of the government’s affordable housing plan, despite salary deductions for the housing levy. Awareness is lower in rural areas, with many missing out on key incentives due to poor public engagement.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has indeed highlighted a significant awareness gap regarding the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).
According to recent findings, approximately 46.4% of Kenyans, which translates to around 13 million individuals, are not aware of this initiative despite the mandatory 1.5% salary deduction implemented to fund it.
This lack of awareness is particularly pronounced in rural areas, where nearly half (49.7%) of respondents are unaware of the program, compared to 40.1% in urban areas.
The government’s efforts to inform the public about the AHP seem to have fallen short, leading to a situation where many Kenyans are contributing financially to a program they do not understand or know about.
This discrepancy underscores the need for more effective public engagement and education strategies by the government to ensure that citizens are informed about policies that directly affect their finances.
