As of the early morning of January 30, 2025, one of the three men who went missing in Mlolongo, Justus Mutumwa, was confirmed dead.
His body was discovered in Ruai, Nairobi, and subsequently moved to the City Mortuary, where his family identified him using fingerprints.
This development occurred shortly after Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohammed Amin appeared in court to address their multiple no-shows regarding the disappearance of these men.
In court, both Kanja and Amin denied any knowledge of the missing men’s whereabouts, asserting that they were not in police custody.
The police chiefs were responding to a summons related to the disappearance of Justus Mutumwa, Martin Mwau, and Karani Muema, who were allegedly abducted in December 2024.
The police have been investigating the case, with reports filed at Mlolongo and Athi River Police Stations.
This case has drawn significant attention due to the pattern of abductions and enforced disappearances in Kenya, with at least 82 cases reported since mid-2024, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.
The situation has sparked public outcry and legal action, with courts ordering the police to provide updates or release the abductees.
The discovery of Mutumwa’s body has heightened concerns over the safety and rights of citizens and the accountability of law enforcement.
The ongoing investigation into the disappearances of the other two men, Martin Mwau and Karani Muema, continues, with the police claiming they are not in custody.
The case remains under scrutiny, with demands for transparency and justice from both the public and legal representatives.
