Kenyans Mobilize Online After PR Firm Hired To Clean Ruto

Recent activity on social media shows that many people in Kenya are unhappy. They are starting online campaigns against President William Ruto.

Protesters are using social media to express their complaints about what they see as government corruption and unfair actions. They are even sending automated emails to public relations firms that President Ruto hired to improve his image in other countries.

These protests are part of a larger movement that uses hashtags like #RutoMustGo. There have been serious street protests that sometimes turned violent, and there are claims of police behaving badly.

This unrest came after President Ruto was said to have hired a public relations firm. He wants to fix Kenya’s image around the world, which has been criticized for bad governance and corruption.

The Kenyan government has started working with international news agencies, APO Group and ZAWYA, to share information about its actions. President Ruto is trying to make Kenya look like a good place for investment.

Since the protests led by young people against high taxes in the Finance Bill 2024, Kenya has faced a lot of attention from other countries. Many Western governments and human rights groups have criticized the government for using too much force against peaceful protests.

There are also reports of serious issues, such as people going missing and being harmed, especially those who speak out against the government, which has made Kenya seem worse in the eyes of the world.

The Kenya Kwanza government is hoping that APO Group can help them improve their public image. This group is skilled in communication and aims to show positive news about the President and his government. They will help create good messages, get coverage in the press, and keep an eye on negative news.

President Ruto has spoken about how negative comments online from Kenyans could scare away potential investors. To fight back against this bad publicity, he is hiring bloggers and social media influencers to promote his Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Reports say the government is paying bloggers between Ksh30,000 and Ksh100,000 each month to share positive stories about its achievements, like affordable housing.

However, many people are still doubtful. Programs like Universal Health Coverage, supported by the Social Health Insurance Fund, have not built public trust.

There are also issues with corruption, like the plan to lease Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Adani Group from India and a bribery scandal involving US$265 million, which have made things worse for the government.

Last week, the government hired communications experts, including Carol Mandi, Archie Ojany-Alai, and Boniface Odinga, to help improve how it communicates with the public. Eliud Owalo, Deputy Chief of Staff for Performance and Delivery Management, said their job is to make the government and its programs look better and engage more with the public.

Mother and joyful journalist.
