China is facing a rise in cases of a virus called human metapneumovirus (HMPV), raising worries about a health crisis similar to COVID-19.
Videos on social media show hospitals that are very busy and struggling to handle the situation.
HMPV was first found in 2001. It is part of the same group of viruses as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and can cause sickness in the lungs and breathing problems.
People with HMPV may have a cough, fever, sore throat, and trouble breathing. Some serious cases can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia.
Young children, older adults, and those with weak immune systems are at greater risk for serious illness.
The virus spreads through droplets when someone coughs or sneezes, makes close contact with others, or touches surfaces that are not clean. Infections usually happen more often in late winter and spring.
In addition to HMPV, there are also more cases of influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumonia, and COVID-19, which are increasing respiratory illnesses in northern China.
Currently, there is no specific medicine or vaccine for HMPV.
Health experts suggest staying safe by washing hands often, wearing masks in crowded places, and staying home if you feel sick.
Health authorities are closely watching the situation.
