A court made an important decision that required social media personality Bongo Ideas to pay GHS ₵ 1.7 billion in damages to Kojo Forex, a well-known forex trader. This ruling followed a serious argument that took place online.
The case started when Bongo Ideas tweeted accusations against Kojo Forex, saying he was doing dishonest things in his trading business.
Kojo Forex quickly responded by filing a lawsuit, claiming that these statements were false and had caused him great harm both financially and personally.
After a long legal process, the court agreed with Kojo Forex, leading to a decision that has attracted a lot of public attention and discussion about how people should be held responsible for what they say online.
Judge Ama Kusi, who was in charge of the case, said, “The actions of the defendant were careless and meant to hurt the plaintiff’s reputation without any proof. Such actions are not acceptable in a society that values truth and honesty.”
The GHS ₵ 1.7 billion awarded, is meant to compensate Kojo Forex for his damages and to discourage similar actions in the future.
Bongo Ideas, who is known for his bold online comments, has not yet spoken about the court’s decision.
Legal experts say he might appeal the ruling, but the large amount of money he has to pay highlights how serious online behaviour is becoming in today’s world.
Meanwhile, Kojo Forex expressed his relief about the decision, saying through his lawyer that “justice has been served.”
The ruling has created divided opinions; some people see it as a win for accountability, while others worry it might limit free speech on the internet.
