Ken Mijungu Fired from KTN, Briefly Joins TV47, Sacked Again

Veteran Kenyan journalist Ken Mijungu has experienced a whirlwind of professional upheaval in recent weeks, with his tenure at two major media houses ending in quick succession.

Mijungu, a well-known news anchor and lawyer, was terminated from Standard Group’s KTN just two weeks ago, only to join Cape Media’s TV47 shortly after—where he was let go almost immediately.

Mijungu’s departure from KTN, where he had served as a prime-time news anchor for four years, was confirmed on February 5, 2025.

In a cryptic social media post, he wrote, “A good dancer knows when to exit the stage,” signalling the end of his contract with the Mombasa Road-based station.

Sources indicated that he opted not to renew his agreement, amid speculation of financial strain at Standard Group, which has seen multiple high-profile exits in recent months.

Days later, on February 7, TV47 announced Mijungu’s arrival with fanfare, touting his extensive experience in political reporting and legal analysis as a boost to their newsroom.

The station, owned by Cape Media, even tied its hiring to a channel repositioning from DStv’s Channel 268 to 274, branding the move as part of their “bigger, better, bolder” vision.

Mijungu was pictured holding a placard that read, “Same channel, same guy, just a better station!”—a message that now carries an ironic twist.

However, his time at TV47 proved astonishingly brief. Reports emerged today that Mijungu was sacked just weeks after joining, with some posts on X suggesting his exit came before he could even make his on-air debut.

A letter from Cape Media’s HR, dated February 22 and obtained by multiple outlets, confirmed the revocation of his January 31 service agreement, effective immediately.

The letter cited Mijungu’s request for time off to “reflect on his engagement” with the company, though the precise reasons for the swift termination remain unclear.

The rapid sequence of events has stunned Kenya’s media circles and sparked intense online chatter. Netizens ranged from shock to scepticism, with some users questioning what transpired behind closed doors at TV47. One post claimed the station announced his firing and then deleted it, adding to the confusion.

Neither Mijungu nor TV47 has issued an official statement as of press time, leaving the public to speculate about the veteran journalist’s next move.

Mijungu, who boasts a 13-year career across outlets like CCTV Africa, MediaMax’s K24, Nation Media Group’s NTV, and KTN, is no stranger to resilience.

Beyond journalism, he runs a car hire business and a legal consultancy, ventures that may now take centre stage as he navigates this turbulent chapter.

For now, his abrupt exits from two prominent stations in under a month raise broader questions about stability and talent retention in Kenya’s competitive media landscape.
