Authorities have confirmed that a 75-year-old British man named Edgar Charles Frederick died after being hit by a car in President William Ruto’s motorcade on March 13.
He was well-known in the area for helping local traders and supporting people in need.
The accident happened near Adams Arcade on Ngong Road while the president’s convoy was moving through the city. Witnesses said the motorcade was driving fast and did not stop after the impact.
On Thursday, National Police Service Spokesperson Michael Muchiri announced that Frederick’s body was taken to Lee Funeral Home for post-mortem examinations and further investigation to find out what happened.
Muchiri stated that the vehicle involved in the accident has been inspected, and the driver, who works for the Nairobi Regional Coordinator, has been released on bail while legal procedures continue. The driver is expected to appear in court later.
Eyewitnesses mentioned that Frederick was walking to a nearby mosque for prayers when the accident occurred.
Many people in the neighbourhood knew him for his kindness, as he often helped poor families by giving them meals and financial support. Traders and residents remembered how he always assisted those in need.
One woman shared that just a day before the accident, she used money he gave her to buy food for her family, showing how dedicated he was to helping others.
Several people who saw the accident said at least two cars in the convoy were speeding when one hit Frederick, and then another car ran over him moments later, which caused his immediate death. Bystanders were horrified to witness it.
Video clips that appeared online shortly after the incident showed people reacting in shock as the motorcade continued without stopping.
Later recordings captured the crowd expressing their sadness and disbelief at what had just happened.
