Tensions rose in Nairobi as Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) protested outside Governor Johnson Sakaja’s office. They want the delayed bursary funds to be released immediately.
The upset lawmakers accused the county leaders of holding back important financial help, leaving students and their families in a difficult situation.
The MCAs also directed their frustration at Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o, asking for her to be removed from her position.
They blamed her for putting strict financial rules in place, which they say are making it hard to provide services in the county.
“Nyakang’o’s rules are stopping us from doing our work,” shouted one MCA during the protest, a feeling shared by many others.
The protestors said that the delayed bursary funds, which are supposed to help poor students, show a bigger problem of mismanagement of money, made worse by the Controller of Budget’s policies.
They want Governor Sakaja to step in and speed up the release of the funds, warning that they will take stronger action if their demands are not met.
