Evangelist Ebuka Obi, the leader of Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, is in the news across Nigeria for serious claims about a fake miracle scandal involving his church.
The trouble started when a woman, who was praised for saying she bought a mansion worth N500 million, admitted that her story was made up, and this was done under Pastor Ebuka Obi’s instruction. This revelation caused anger and doubt online.
This unnamed woman had given her testimony a few months ago at Zion Ministry in Lagos, impressing many in the church and online with her story about becoming rich. She said she went from being a petty trader with goods worth N300,000 to owning a fancy mansion in a wealthy area of Lagos called Lekki.
However, investigations found out that she was actually a small trader from Enugu State, breaking the idea of her miraculous wealth.
In a surprising development, she confessed in a video that her testimony was all fake, saying it was planned by the church to motivate people and encourage them to give money.
“Everything I said was planned. They told me what to say to make it sound real,” she said in the video.
This news has led to discussions about how true miracles really are in Nigeria’s religious scene, with many people searching online for terms like “fake miracles Nigeria” and “Ebuka Obi scam.”
Things got worse when reports said that the woman faced legal issues after her lies were revealed. The actual owner of the mansion she wrongly claimed to own reportedly had her arrested for falsely pretending the property was hers.
It seems the owner took quick action when they found out about her deception, putting more pressure on Zion Ministry and its leader.
At the time of this reporting, neither Pastor Ebuka Obi nor the church had made any formal comments about the allegations, leaving both supporters and critics waiting for a response.
This incident is just the latest in a series of scandals involving the self-proclaimed prophet, who has gained a lot of followers through claims of miraculous healings and wealth.
Earlier accusations, including a staged healing with the late actor John Okafor (Mr. Ibu) in 2023, have come up again along with this scandal, as critics on social media accuse Obi of being dishonest.
“Another fake story revealed! How long will this keep happening?” asked one user, reflecting feelings shared widely across social media.
As this situation continues to unfold, the story of Ebuka Obi has brought back calls for more responsibility in religious institutions.
