Deputy Party Leader of the Democratic Change Party (DCP), Cleophas Malala, shared his anger on social media on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. This came after the management of Kasarani Indoor Arena cancelled their booking for the venue just a few days before their planned launch event.
The DCP explained that they had first asked to use the venue on June 4, 2025, in a letter sent on May 20.
The management replied that June 4 was not available but offered them June 3 instead, which the party happily accepted. They then paid the full amount for the venue.
In Malala’s message, he stated, “On May 20, 2025, we wrote to the management to book the venue for our DCP Party launch on June 4, 2025.” He continued, “We accepted the offer for June 3 and received an invoice to make the payment.”
However, on May 21, the party received a letter from Sports Kenya saying the venue would not be available on June 3 or at any time soon because they were preparing for the 2025 CHAN tournament. The letter instructed the party to find another place for their event.
Malala mentioned that on May 21, Sports Kenya officially cancelled their booking and said the venue would not be available for the DCP launch or any other events in the future. They were told to look for a different venue.
The DCP believes this cancellation is a planned attempt by the government to stop their launch from happening.
They argue that the Kasarani Indoor Arena is a public space paid for by the people, and everyone has the right to use it for lawful activities.
Malala expressed, “The cancellation by Sports Kenya is an attack on democracy. It is a clear effort by the government to stop the DCP launch. The Kasarani Indoor Arena belongs to the public, and every Kenyan should have the chance to use it for the common good. Skiza Wakenya!”
