An imam, Malau Ahmed Malau, aged 47 and based in Mombasa, has been charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy in a mosque.
Malau Ahmed Malau appeared in front of Senior Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo. He was accused of breaking the law regarding sexual offences as stated in the Sexual Offences Act.
The court heard that the incident happened on April 28, 2025, inside Mwijabu Mosque, located in Mvita Sub County, Mombasa County.
The boy had run away from his father’s home in Moyale to visit his mother in Mombasa. However, when he got there, he found out that she had gone to Garissa on the same day.
Alone and without a place to stay, the boy went to the mosque for help.
The boy borrowed a mobile phone to call his mother, who was in Garissa. During this time, he met the imam, who offered him food and a place to sleep in the mosque.
Unfortunately, what started as kindness turned into four nights of sexual abuse, as prosecutors say.
The imam took the boy to his room on the upper floor of the mosque and repeatedly assaulted him during their stay.
The boy’s mother, worried about him after hearing he had left Moyale, came back from Garissa. With the help of family members, she found him at the mosque. There, the boy told his family about what happened to him.
The imam denied the charges and was released on a bond of Ksh.500,000, with a similar amount for a surety. The next court meeting is set for May 27, 2025.
