Wetang’ula orders MPs to submit bodyguards for fresh checks

Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, has told all Members of Parliament to submit their bodyguards for new checks.

This decision follows the shooting of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was killed in Nairobi on April 30, 2025.

During a memorial service for the late MP, Wetang’ula expressed his worries about internal threats and ordered a complete review of the security arrangements for all MPs.

He also asked the Clerk of Parliament to gather all CCTV footage showing the late MP’s movements in Parliament on the day he was killed.

This directive comes as the investigation is getting more serious. Six suspects are already in custody, including the MP’s driver and bodyguard, and more arrests are happening.

Wetang’ula also requested Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to make sure that all CCTV cameras in the city work continuously to help prevent crime.

This situation follows an incident where the bodyguard of an MP from Embakasi West allegedly committed suicide last year after claims that the MP did not pay him over 40,000 shillings for a whole month’s allowance.
