I will always remember that court day. I considered it to be one of the most embarrassing experiences of my career. In a property dispute matter that had been dragging on for years, I was defending a modest and elderly client. My rival was a well-known attorney who exuded charm, self-assurance, and support from a group of ostentatious acquaintances. The courtroom was full. It looked like everyone was expecting my client to lose.
It was not long before the courtroom erupted in laughter as I took the stand to make my case. They made fun of my tone, my word choice, and even the way I gripped my notes. When I presented our allegation, the judge himself arched an eyebrow. They obviously didn’t think I was serious. Behind me, I could sense the muttered laughter and sneers.
