Tensions rose in late May when anti-corruption officials searched his house for alleged corruption issues, which even led to his brief arrest in Nairobi.

There has been conflict between Natembeya and some leaders in the Kenya Kwanza party because he has spoken out about feeling neglected and about important governance problems.
Before the celebration, Natembeya shared his frustrations about the country and said he didn’t see a reason to attend.
He also missed the main national event in Homa Bay, where he skipped it because of the ongoing corruption issues against him.
During the Trans Nzoia celebration, people left chanting “WANTAM” just as County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi was about to read President Ruto’s message.
The absence of Governor Natembeya at such a key event showed a lack of support from the local leaders, which contributed to the peoples’ decision to walk out, leaving only a few local officials and members from NGAO present.
