Huyu tutamuua! Ebel Ochieng Kalo, Ong’ondo Were murder suspect threatens prosecutor

A courtroom was thrown into chaos on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, when Ebel Ochieng Kalo, a key suspect in the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were, allegedly threatened to kill the state prosecutor during a hearing at the Kibera Law Courts.

Ochieng, a board member of the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) and a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) official, reportedly shouted “Huyu tutamuua” (Swahili for “We will kill him”) while targeting prosecutor Allan Mulama, who had opposed his bail application.

The outburst occurred during a court recess as Justice Diana Kavedza Mochache prepared to deliver a ruling.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Ochieng approached Mulama, enquired about his identity, and issued the chilling threat, prompting the prosecutor to leave the courtroom for safety.

“The accused, Ebel Ochieng, threatened to kill ODPP officer Allan Mulama, prompting the state counsel to leave the courtroom,” the prosecution stated.

Justice Kavedza, expressing dismay at the incident, denied bail to Ochieng and two other suspects, ordering their remand at Nairobi Industrial Remand Prison.

“I am so frightened by the words,” the judge remarked, directing that Ochieng be isolated from the other suspects and escorted to Mathari Hospital for a mental assessment before formal charges are filed. The court also ordered heightened security for future proceedings.

Ochieng is among several suspects linked to the assassination of MP Were, who was gunned down on April 30, 2025, along Ngong Road in Nairobi in what police have described as a “targeted and premeditated” attack.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested multiple individuals, including the MP’s bodyguard and driver, with evidence suggesting a well-orchestrated plot.

A Sarsilmaz pistol recovered from one suspect has been ballistically linked to the fatal shots.
