Liverpool Football Club is close to making a big signing by bringing in Florian Wirtz, a talented midfielder from Bayer Leverkusen. Today, Wirtz arrived in England to complete a record deal worth £116 million.
The 22-year-old German player is set to have a medical examination in the next two days. After that, he will officially become Liverpool’s most expensive player ever, beating the previous record of £85 million paid for Darwin Núñez in 2022.
This transfer, which was agreed upon eight days ago, is a major achievement for Liverpool, led by manager Arne Slot.
The deal involves an initial payment of £100 million, with the chance to earn an additional £16 million if Wirtz meets certain performance goals.
If all bonuses are achieved, this transfer will become the most expensive in British football history, surpassing Chelsea’s £115 million deal for Moisés Caicedo in 2023.
Reports show that Wirtz will earn around £200,000 per week, which fits well with Liverpool’s pay scale. Some rumors about him earning as much as £350,000 a week have been said to be incorrect, as his total salary includes bonuses based on his and the team’s performance.
This means Wirtz will be just below top earners like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, with the chance to increase his pay if he performs well.
Wirtz chose Liverpool over Bayern Munich and Manchester City back in May. He is known for his skill and creativity. Last season, he scored 16 goals and provided 15 assists in 45 games for Leverkusen, helping his team finish second in the Bundesliga.
Since he started playing in the Bundesliga at 17 years old, he has made 44 assists, which is the third-highest ever, showing his amazing talent and potential.
This signing comes after Liverpool made other transfers this summer, including bringing in Jeremie Frimpong and Armin Pecsi. Although Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid, which showed a need for more creativity in the team, Wirtz is expected to help fill this gap.
Manager Arne Slot, who personally encouraged Wirtz to join Liverpool, believes the German player will be an important part of the team’s attack.
As Wirtz prepares for his medical exam on Friday, fans are excited and waiting for the official announcement. His arrival is expected to bring more energy and skill to Liverpool’s midfield, making them strong candidates for the upcoming 2025-26 Premier League title.
