I can still picture the icy, contemptuous, and unrepentant expression on his face. I entered the office as normal that morning, not anticipating anything unusual. By ten in the morning, I was unemployed. No justification. The words “termination effective immediately” were written on a chilly envelope. After three years of devotion, it seemed as though I had lost all significance to him. He was the operations manager at the logistics company where I worked, and his name was Mr Kariuki. I was excellent at my work, not simply good at it.
I oversaw accounts, planned shipments, and provided training to younger employees. However, things took a turn for the worse when I argued with him over a procurement procedure that seemed corrupt. He started ignoring me. Then there was the sudden dismissal. Not a warning. No hearing. Just the embarrassment of having security escort you out. I was broken when I got home. In two weeks, my rent was due. I was helping to pay for my younger sister’s college education.
